This is a portrait of Hilary Mantel, the two-time Booker Prize-winning author known for her trilogy of novels based on the life of Thomas Cromwell.
The closest I got to her work was watching ‘Wolf Hall’ by the BBC, but I’ve also seen her in one of my favorite programs, the ‘Portrait Artists of the Year’. The winner received a commission to paint her, and the program showed the interaction between Mantel and the artist while he was painting her.
The process was so inspiring that I decided to paint my own Hilary Mantel portrait. I didn’t intended to post this painting, but now she has passed away I thought I would share it with her fans.
I was born and raised in Japan. I don't know if it's clear but I hope the unique sensibility that was nurtured there shows in my creations. My favorite medium is acrylic on canvas, and my subjects come from my surroundings, including still lifes, landscapes, and pets. I live with my husband in Seattle.
